Mesothelioma Metastasis - A diagnosis of mesothelioma metastasis means that cancer caused by asbestos exposure has spread to other parts of body from where it originally emerged. When any cancer has metastized, this indicates the cancer has progressed into an advanced stage and may not be successfully treatable. Because mesothelioma is not normally diagnosed in its early stages, it has a good chance to spread into other areas of the body. The lymphatic system, which consists of a network of glands interconnected to each other, is especially susceptible to infiltration of cancer cells. Pleural mesothelioma, the most common kind of mesothelioma since it is located in and around the lungs, promotes metastasis because of its proximity to the circulatory system.

When mesothelioma has spread to several areas of the body, a diagnosis of “stage 4? is made, meaning someone is suffering from the terminal stage of asbestos mesothelioma. Stage one, a stage rarely diagnosed in individuals with mesothelioma because of the delay of symptom manifestation, means that a localized tumor has been found and can be easily excised. When mesothelioma cells are discovered in and outside of both lungs, a diagnosis of stage 2 is made. Stage three indicates that nearby organs and possibly the lymph nodes are infected with abnormal cancer cells.

Depending on certain factors, stage three may be treatable if two treatment programs are aggressively pursued. However, factors facilitating the success of this treatment include age of the mesothelioma patient, his or her health condition at the time of diagnosis and extent of the metastasis. With mesothelioma metastasis, however, treatment involves simply giving palliative care to those suffering from this stage of asbestos cancer and making them as comfortable as possible.

Individuals suffering from secondary tumors usually have about three to six months before the cancer cells begin shutting down the body’s systems. Sometimes, imaging techniques such as PETs and CTs can detect tumors before they develop into secondary types and surgical removal of these tumors can prolong the life of someone diagnosed with mesothelioma.
